Galway City Tribune – A Council house on the east side of Galway City, which was allegedly misappropriated years ago by a senior local authority official, is being advertised for rent on a popular property website.
The explosive allegation was contained in a whistleblower’s dossier detailing wide-ranging claims of wrongdoing and misappropriation of Galway City Council property.
Details of this and other cases have been forwarded to Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman, John McGuinness, a Fianna Fáil TD.
Environment Minister Eoghan Murphy (FG) is also understood to be aware of the allegations, some of which are historic.
The matter is the subject of an ongoing probe, after a Council employee made a protected disclosure and it was brought to the attention of management at City Hall.
The allegation is that a senior official, who worked for a period at Galway City Council (formerly Galway Corporation), procured a Council house over the past two decades.
It is claimed the official secured the property despite already owning a home, and despite not meeting the income criteria to qualify for social housing – that is, the named individual’s income was higher than the threshold under which one can qualify for social housing.
